Carrollton Concrete, Built for Busy Driveways
Carrollton sits just north of the Suffolk line in Isle of Wight County, so it is one of the shortest trips we make. People here call concrete contractors for the jobs that come with newer homes: a driveway that needs more room, a backyard patio, a walkway, or a slab for a shed. The 2020 census counted 7,498 residents in Carrollton, and Wikipedia describes it as a bedroom community that has grown recently.
Built mostly in the last twenty years
Several residential communities have been developed in Carrollton since 2001, and the area's growth has brought houses, condominiums, schools and new hospitals. Eagle Harbor is one example: its plans were approved in the 1970s, but the subdivision sat dormant until about 2000. That history means most driveways and patios here are fairly young. The usual problems are less about age and more about how the concrete was first placed: thin edges, too few control joints, or a base that was not compacted well.
Commuter driveways take a beating
More than 30,000 vehicles a day cross the Route 17 James River Bridge through Carrollton, many of them carrying commuters to and from Newport News Shipbuilding. Plenty of those cars and trucks start the day in a Carrollton driveway. Daily use, heavier pickups and a second or third car mean the driveway is the slab that matters most.
For a new or replacement driveway, we:
- pour at least four inches thick, more where trucks park,
- reinforce with rebar or mesh based on the load,
- thicken the edges where tires roll off the side,
- and space control joints close enough to keep cracks in line.
Water on three sides
Carrollton is bordered by tidal creeks: Chuckatuck Creek along the south, Winall Creek and Ragged Island Creek on the east, and Brewers Creek along part of the west side, with the James River nearby. The listed elevation is 22 feet. On land cut by that much water, low spots in a yard can stay wet. Before we pour a patio or a walkway, we look at where water collects and set the grade so the new concrete does not create a new puddle against the house.
Upgrades owners ask for
Stamped concrete patios make a good step up from a builder's small pad. We can extend the existing pad or remove it and pour one larger patio with a single pattern. Sidewalks and walkways around the side of the house keep shoes out of the mud on the way to the trash cans or the backyard. Concrete slabs go under sheds, hot tubs and generator pads. And concrete repair handles cracks and settled corners on driveways whose base or joints were not done well the first time.
Hot tub and grill pads
Backyards in newer Carrollton subdivisions often get a hot tub or a built-in grill a few years after move-in. A filled hot tub is heavy, so a thin patio corner is not the place for it. We pour a dedicated pad, usually four to six inches thick with reinforcement, sized a little larger than the tub so you can step around it. We plan where the electrical line will come up before we pour, so no one has to cut new concrete later.
HOA and county rules
Carrollton is unincorporated, so permits run through Isle of Wight County rather than a town hall, and many of the newer subdivisions add HOA rules on driveway width, color or patterns. Bring any HOA guidelines to the estimate; we check the county side for your address. Call (757) 720-2469 for a free estimate.

Carrollton Questions
My Carrollton driveway is only a few years old and already cracked. Why?
Some cracking is normal shrinkage. Wide or uneven cracks usually point to thin edges, a soft base or too few control joints. We can seal minor cracks, and if a section has sunk we can replace it.
Can you extend the small patio the builder poured?
Yes. We can add to it with a proper joint, or remove it and pour one larger patio so the color and pattern are consistent.
Do HOAs in Carrollton limit driveway changes?
Many subdivisions have rules about driveway width and materials. We ask you to check with your HOA, and we plan the design around what it allows.
