Pouring Concrete Next Door in Chesapeake
Chesapeake shares a long border with Suffolk, and homeowners there call concrete contractors for the same reasons people do in Suffolk: a cracked driveway, a patio that is too small, a walkway that turns to mud every time it rains. The city counted 249,422 people in 2020 and an estimated 255,332 in 2025. It is the second-largest city in Virginia by land area, so we drive a lot of different roads to reach jobs here, from Western Branch on the Suffolk side down toward the North Carolina line.
Wetlands, farmland and suburbs side by side
Wikipedia describes Chesapeake as having many square miles of protected farmland, forests and wetlands, and notes that the northeastern part of the Great Dismal Swamp lies inside the city. City leaders have long balanced new neighborhoods against those wet areas. For concrete, that means two things. First, many lots sit close to soft or damp ground, so the base under a slab matters more than the slab's thickness. Second, a lot of the housing is recent, poured by builders on a schedule, and owners now want to expand or upgrade it.
How we build a driveway that lasts here
1. Dig to firm ground. We remove topsoil and soft fill rather than pouring over it. 2. Build a real base. Crushed stone, compacted in lifts, gives the slab even support and lets water move under it. 3. Set the grade. We slope the surface so runoff heads to the street or a drain, not to the garage door. 4. Reinforce and joint. We use rebar or wire mesh based on the load, and cut control joints so cracks stay in straight lines. 5. Cure it. We keep the slab from drying too fast, which is a real risk in a humid but hot Hampton Roads summer.
Patios and stamped concrete for backyard living
Chesapeake gets about 48.4 inches of rain a year, with July and August the wettest months at 5.3 inches each. A backyard patio has to handle those summer downpours. We pitch patios away from the house and keep the top of the slab below door thresholds. Stamped concrete is a common pick for patios and pool surrounds because it gives the look of stone or brick in one poured slab, without individual pavers to settle or sprout weeds. We add a texture or a slip-resistant additive in the sealer for areas that get wet.
Sidewalks, slabs and repair
We pour sidewalks and walkways from the driveway to the front door, around the side yard and out to sheds. We pour concrete slabs for detached garages, workshops, HVAC pads and storage buildings, with thickened edges where walls will sit. And we do concrete repair: filling and sealing cracks, patching spalled spots, and replacing sections that have sunk or heaved. If most of a driveway is failing, we will tell you plainly that replacement is the better spend.
Four corners of a big city
Chesapeake is large enough that the job changes with the neighborhood, and we have separate pages for the parts we work in most. Western Branch, the northernmost borough, is almost entirely residential, with many homes from the 1970s and early 1980s whose original driveways are now due. Bowers Hill, just south of it at the northeastern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp, sits on low, sandy coastal plain. Deep Creek, where the Dismal Swamp Canal meets the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, mixes subdivisions with older homes on bigger lots. Great Bridge, home to City Hall and the Central Library, grew from a crossroads into a suburb in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Permits and the street
Where a new or widened driveway apron ties into a Chesapeake street, or a project reaches the public sidewalk, we check the city's current requirements for your address before we put a pour date on the calendar. Call (757) 720-2469 to book a visit.

Chesapeake Questions
My Chesapeake lot stays soggy. Can you still pour a patio?
Yes, but the prep changes. We dig deeper, add more crushed stone, and grade the area so water flows away. In some yards a small drain or a raised slab edge helps. We look at the site before we recommend anything.
Is stamped concrete slippery around a pool?
A smooth stamped surface with glossy sealer can be slick when wet. We choose a textured stamp pattern and can add a grit additive to the sealer to improve traction.
Does Chesapeake require a permit for driveway work?
It depends on the work and the address. We check the city's current rules for anything that touches the street or public sidewalk before we schedule the pour.
