Crossing the River for Newport News Jobs
Newport News is right across the James River Bridge from Carrollton, so it is an easy drive from Suffolk, and we take concrete jobs there year-round. As concrete contractors, we notice that the city's housing has come in waves tied to the shipyard, and each wave left behind a different kind of driveway, patio and walkway. The city had 186,247 residents in the 2020 census, spread over about 69 square miles of land.
A city shaped by shipbuilding
The shipbuilding company took the name Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. in 1890, and the city incorporated in 1896. In 1958 Newport News and Warwick merged and kept the better-known name. Wartime worker housing produced Hilton Village, the first government-built planned community, with 473 English-village-style homes. Much later, Port Warwick opened as an urban neighborhood near City Center at Oyster Point, which itself opened in phases from 2003 to 2005, and about 1,500 people now live in the Port Warwick area.
Matching the job to the neighborhood
Historic homes. In Hilton Village and other older sections, concrete is usually limited to front walks, steps, narrow driveways and small rear patios. Work here is about clean replacement and a finish that fits the street.
Postwar suburbs. Newport News spread into suburbs after World War II, and some of those houses may still have the driveway and carport slab they were built with. Typical problems at that age are settling at the garage, cracks from roots and surfaces worn down to the stone. Many are ready for full replacement.
Newer construction. In newer areas the asks are mostly upgrades: a larger stamped patio, a wider driveway, a walk to the side gate.
A note on climate
Newport News averages about 45 inches of rain a year, and its July mean daily high is near 90 degrees under the 1981 to 2010 normals. Snow is light, averaging under six inches a season, but freezes still happen. That mix of summer heat and winter freeze-thaw is why we use air-entrained concrete outside, cure every slab with care and seal decorative work. Water makes up more than 40% of the city's total area, so many homes sit close to a creek, the harbor or the river; we pay close attention to slope on those lots.
What we pour
- Concrete driveways: full replacements, widenings and new aprons, built on compacted stone with rebar or mesh.
- Concrete patios and stamped concrete: plain broom finish or patterned and colored surfaces with sealer.
- Sidewalks and walkways: front walks, side paths and steps.
- Concrete slabs: sheds, workshops, garages and equipment pads.
- Concrete repair: crack sealing, patching, and section replacement when only part of a slab has failed.
Planning around tight streets
In older neighborhoods, streets are narrow and parking is limited, which affects how a concrete truck gets close to the forms. Sometimes we use a pump or wheelbarrows to reach a back patio. We plan that before pour day so there are no surprises for you or your neighbors.
City permits
Newport News is an independent city, and since the 1958 consolidation that includes the former city of Warwick, so permit questions go to the City of Newport News. We check what applies, especially where a driveway meets the street, and then give you a written quote. Call (757) 720-2469 to book.

Newport News Questions
Do you really cover Newport News from Suffolk?
Yes. The James River Bridge puts Newport News within easy reach, and we schedule pours there just as we do on the south side.
My driveway is cracked everywhere. Repair or replace?
When cracks run across most of the slab and sections have sunk, replacement usually lasts longer and costs less over time than repeated patching. We will look at it and give you both options if repair still makes sense.
Can a concrete truck reach my back yard in Hilton Village?
On tight lots we often use a concrete pump or wheel the concrete in. We plan access during the estimate so pour day goes smoothly.
