Concrete Near the Crooked Creek

Chuckatuck is a village in northern Suffolk where State Routes 10, 32 and 125 meet, just south of Chuckatuck Creek. Homeowners here hire concrete contractors for driveways, patios, walkways, shed slabs and repairs, and we cover it as part of our home city. The name is a Nansemond word meaning "crooked," after the winding creek north of the village.

A very old place

Colonist Richard Bartlett built a grist mill at the head of Chuckatuck Creek as early as 1635. The village grew into a small rural crossroads, and today it has a general store, a garden store, an auto repair shop, three churches and Suffolk's station nine, run as the Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department. Former Virginia Governor Mills Godwin and jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd both grew up here.

Suffolk's own Wikipedia page counts Chuckatuck among the city's more rural boroughs. We plan each job for the house and the ground in front of us.

Close to the creek

The village's elevation is 36 feet, and Chuckatuck Creek, which Routes 10 and 32 cross just north of it, is tidal; downstream it forms the southern border of Carrollton. Lots near the water can have low corners and damp soil. Before we pour, we:

  • probe the ground for soft spots,
  • dig out organic soil and roots,
  • build up a compacted crushed stone base,
  • set the slab above the surrounding grade,
  • and pitch it so water drains away from the house.

Popular projects

Stamped patios suit country lots where a backyard patio looks out over fields or woods. We like patterns such as ashlar slate and random stone here. A color hardener or integral color, a contrasting release and a quality sealer finish the look.

Driveways matter just as much. Where a house sits well back from the road, the driveway is longer than in a subdivision. We size thickness and joint spacing for the length and for any trucks or trailers.

Walkways and steps connect driveways to front doors and back porches. We give them a broom finish for grip.

Slabs for life outside town

Rural living means sheds, workshops, boat storage and generator pads. A concrete slab gives each of those a solid, level floor that keeps moisture and pests down. We thicken the edges under walls and set anchor bolts where framing will go. For boat or trailer pads, we use thicker concrete and rebar where the tongue jack sits.

Repairs

Older slabs near the crossroads may show cracking, chipped edges or sunken sections near downspouts. Our concrete repair work covers crack filling, patching and section replacement. If water from a roof is causing the problem, we will point that out so the new concrete does not suffer the same fate.

Weather and timing

The wettest months in Suffolk run from July to September. We pour early on hot days, keep fresh concrete moist while it cures, and reschedule rather than pour ahead of a big storm.

Work along city streets

Chuckatuck is inside the City of Suffolk, so work in the public right-of-way follows city rules. The Driveway Application asks for notice to the Engineering Division at least seven calendar days before work in the right-of-way begins, and the city's restoration manual requires a closure permit when a job blocks a sidewalk or someone else's driveway. On narrow roads near the crossroads, that closure question comes up more than people expect, so we plan for it early.

Chuckatuck Questions

My Chuckatuck yard is low near the creek. Can I still have a patio?

Yes. We build up the base, set the patio slightly higher than the yard and slope it to drain. In very wet spots, we may suggest a small drain along one edge.

What stamped pattern suits a country property?

Natural stone patterns like ashlar slate or random stone fit rural homes well. We bring samples so you can see the colors in your own light.

Can you pour a pad for a boat trailer?

Yes. We pour it thicker with rebar, especially where the tongue jack and tires sit, and slope it so rain runs off.
