From Crossroads to Suburb
Great Bridge is the part of Chesapeake where City Hall and the main library sit, and it is where many of the city's newer neighborhoods grew. Homeowners here call concrete contractors for driveway replacement, backyard patios, walkways, slabs and repairs. Wikipedia says Great Bridge was essentially a small town or crossroads until the late 1980s and 1990s, when it saw significant growth and gained large residential areas and shopping centers.
Thirty-year-old concrete
That growth spurt matters for flatwork. Homes built in the late 1980s and 1990s are now roughly 25 to 35 years old, and so is their original concrete. Builder driveways from that time are reaching the age where problems show up:
- Settled garage aprons where the slab meets the garage floor.
- Long cracks across the driveway where joints were spaced too far apart.
- Surface scaling, where the top layer flakes off after years of freeze-thaw and deicers.
- Lifted walks near trees that were saplings when the house was new and are now big.
We assess each one and tell you what can be repaired and what should be replaced.
Why the place is called Great Bridge
The community is tied to the Battle of Great Bridge, fought on December 9, 1775, which came just months after Lexington and Concord. That battle drove British forces from Fort Murray back to Norfolk and helped end royal government in Virginia. The library in Great Bridge displays a cannonball labeled as fired during the battle.
Replacing an older driveway
Our replacement process: 1. Saw-cut and remove the old slab, including the apron if needed. 2. Dig out soft soil and compact a crushed stone base. 3. Set forms for a slope that carries water away from the garage. 4. Place reinforcement on chairs. 5. Pour, finish and broom the surface for traction. 6. Saw-cut control joints at a spacing suited to the slab width. 7. Cure the slab and seal it once it has dried.
Patios for established yards
By now, many Great Bridge backyards have mature landscaping and fences, and owners want a better place to sit outside. A stamped concrete patio adds stone or brick texture. A broom-finished concrete patio is simpler and easy to maintain. We can also add a seat wall or step down from a deck. Access through a gate can be tight in a fenced yard, so we plan whether to use a pump or wheelbarrows.
Other services
We pour sidewalks and walkways, from front walks to paths around the side of the house. We pour concrete slabs for sheds, garages and hot tubs. And our concrete repair work handles cracks, spalling and settled sections on slabs that are still mostly sound.
Chesapeake's wet climate
Chesapeake averages about 48 inches of rain a year, with July and August the wettest months. Good slope and a well-built base are the strongest protection against standing water. We plan every slab to drain.
Matching new work to the neighborhood
In established Great Bridge subdivisions, houses on the same street often share a similar driveway width and finish. When we replace a driveway, we keep the look in line with the street unless you want something different. If your HOA sets rules on materials or colors for driveways and patios, bring them to the estimate and we will design around them.

Great Bridge Questions
My Great Bridge driveway is flaking on top. What causes that?
Surface scaling usually comes from freeze-thaw cycles, deicing salt or a finish that was overworked when it was poured. Light scaling can be resurfaced or sealed. Heavy scaling usually means replacement.
Can you replace just the garage apron?
Yes. If only the apron has sunk, we can cut it out, rebuild the base and pour a new section that meets the garage slab and driveway cleanly.
Can you get concrete into a fenced backyard?
Usually, yes. We use a pump or wheelbarrows through the gate, and we protect the lawn along the route.
