Holland's Homes and Outbuildings

Holland is a community in Suffolk that was once its own incorporated town in the southwestern part of Nansemond County. Homeowners and farmers here look to concrete contractors for durable, low-fuss work: driveways that do not wash out, shop floors that take heavy loads and patios that make a country house more comfortable. We cover Holland as part of our home city.

A small town with deep roots

Holland takes its name from the Holland family, who were living in Nansemond County by the 1600s. It became a stop on the Atlantic and Danville Railway in 1890, and on May 21, 1928, the first Ruritan Club in the United States was founded here. In 1972, Holland merged with Nansemond County and Whaleyville to form the city of Nansemond, and in 1974 Nansemond merged with Suffolk.

On rural properties like these, the house is often only part of the job; a barn, a shed or an equipment building may need a floor too.

Typical Holland projects

Some common situations and how we handle them: 1. A gravel driveway that washes out every big storm: we can pour a full concrete driveway or concrete wheel strips with a grass or gravel center. 2. An equipment shed with a dirt floor: we pour slabs with thickened edges and rebar, and slope them to drain. 3. Back steps and a walk that are crumbling: we remove them and pour new steps and a walk with a non-slip finish. 4. No place to sit outside: a broom-finish or stamped concrete patio, sized to how you use it. 5. A crack across the shop floor: we look at whether it is moving, then fill and seal it or replace the section.

Building for heavy rain

Suffolk averages 51.82 inches of rain a year, and the wettest months are July through September. In open farm country, runoff can sheet across a yard. When we pour in Holland, we look at where water travels across the whole property, not just at the slab. We set the slab above grade, slope it, and make sure runoff from the new surface has somewhere to go.

Concrete that handles the loads

Farm and shop slabs take point loads from jacks, tractor tires and stored equipment. Thickness, a well-compacted base and properly placed reinforcement matter more than anything else. We keep rebar up in the middle of the slab on chairs and use concrete with enough strength for the job. Control joints are cut early, on the day of the pour or the next morning, so cracks stay where we want them.

Repairs for older concrete

On older properties, slabs were often poured decades ago without much base. Some are still solid enough to repair: we can fill cracks, patch spalled spots and rebuild broken edges. When a slab has settled badly or broken into pieces, a replacement is the better value, and we will tell you so.

Wheel strips, aprons and full slabs compared

Not every Holland driveway needs to be solid concrete from end to end. A concrete apron at the road keeps gravel off the pavement and stops washouts where the drive meets the ditch. Wheel strips cost less than a full slab and let rain soak into the ground between them. A full slab is the cleanest and easiest to keep up, and it is the right choice where heavy trucks turn or park. We walk the driveway with you and lay out each option so you can choose with the real numbers in front of you.

Entrance rules and getting a quote

Holland is inside the City of Suffolk, so an entrance onto a city street goes through the Department of Public Works' Driveway Application: a $125 non-refundable fee and a call to the Construction Manager 24 hours before work starts so the job can be inspected. We build those steps into the schedule. Call (757) 720-2469 to book a visit.

Holland Questions

Are concrete wheel strips a good option for a Holland driveway?

They can be. Two concrete strips with grass or gravel between them cost less than a full driveway and drain well. They work well on straight driveways used by cars rather than heavy trucks.

Can you pour a slab inside an existing shed?

Often, yes, if we can get forms, a stone base and concrete inside. Sometimes we pump the concrete in. We check access during the estimate.

How long before I can drive equipment on a new slab?

We usually ask for at least a week before cars and longer before heavy equipment. Concrete keeps gaining strength for about a month.
