Pughsville Concrete, Built Around Drainage
Pughsville is a wooded community in northern Suffolk, right along the Chesapeake border, and we take concrete contractors' jobs here for driveways, patios, walks, slabs and repair. It was settled by African Americans and was part of Nansemond County before that county merged into Suffolk in the 1970s. Wikipedia notes that drainage problems have affected the area, and that single fact shapes almost every concrete job we quote here.
Why drainage comes first
When a yard holds water, concrete suffers. Water under a slab softens the base, and the slab settles and cracks. Water on top of a slab soaks in, and in winter it can freeze and flake the surface. In Pughsville, we treat every driveway, patio and walk as a drainage project first.
Our checklist on each visit:
- Where does water stand after a storm?
- Where do the downspouts empty?
- Which way does the lot fall toward the street or a ditch?
- Will the new slab block a path water uses today?
Building the base right
Once we know how water moves, we design the base. We remove organic soil and any soft clay, then lay crushed stone in layers and compact each one. On wetter lots we go thicker with the stone. That base spreads the load and lets water move under the slab instead of sitting against it. The concrete then goes on top at a steady slope, about a quarter inch per foot on patios and walks.
Services for Pughsville homes
Concrete driveways. We replace cracked and sunken driveways and pour new ones, with rebar or mesh and control joints spaced to the slab size.
Concrete patios and stamped concrete. Backyard patios work well here when set slightly above the lawn and pitched away from the house. Stamped patterns add a finished look; we seal them to resist water.
Sidewalks and walkways. A walk across a soggy yard keeps feet dry. We set it a little higher than the grass with a gentle crown.
Concrete slabs. Shed and workshop floors, HVAC pads and generator pads, all built on solid stone bases.
Concrete repair. Crack sealing, patching and section replacement. If a slab sank because water got under it, we fix the drainage cause too.
Close to Chesapeake
Old Pughsville Road runs into Chesapeake, and Pughsville Road (State Route 659) carries the community's name. Living on the border, some owners are not sure which city's rules apply to their property. We check that for your address, along with whether a permit is needed for a new driveway entrance or sidewalk work.
Trees and roots
The area is wooded, and big trees are part of its charm. Roots can lift and crack slabs over time. When we pour near trees, we keep the slab back from the trunk where possible, and we can cut a root barrier if roots are already causing trouble. We will not cut major roots of a healthy tree without talking with you first.
Sidewalks along the road
On the Suffolk side of the line, the city's right-of-way restoration manual sets the rules for public sidewalk work: a damaged walk is removed and replaced in full sections out to the nearest joint, edges are saw cut, and backfill is compacted before the new concrete goes in. Excavating in the right-of-way without a permit is unlawful under the same manual. If the walk in front of your house has settled because water collects along the road, we look at that drainage too, since a new panel on the same wet ground will drop again.

Pughsville Questions
Will a new driveway fix the water in my Pughsville yard?
It can help if the old driveway was sending water the wrong way. We grade the new slab so runoff goes toward the street or a ditch. If the whole yard is low, we may suggest added drainage along with the concrete.
Why is my patio sinking at one corner?
Usually water has softened the soil under that corner, often from a downspout or a low spot. We can replace or lift that section and fix the source of the water.
Do you work on both sides of the Suffolk and Chesapeake line?
Yes. We serve both cities and check which city's rules apply to your address.
