Concrete in Driver, Old and New
Driver is a neighborhood inside the city of Suffolk, at the junction of State Routes 337, 125 and 627, and it is close to home for us as concrete contractors. The village was first named Persimmon Orchard and sat on the now-abandoned Atlantic Coast Line Railroad line between the old town of Suffolk and Portsmouth. Wikipedia notes that Hampton Roads has urbanized heavily around Driver, while the village itself has been called "suspended in time." That mix sets the tone for concrete work here: careful jobs near historic buildings, and practical upgrades in the subdivisions nearby.
The historic core
The Driver Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the village keeps an old-time general store and an annual festival, Driver Days. Older homes near the crossroads tend to have short walks, porch steps and small driveways. When those slabs fail, we:
- remove them in cut pieces so we do not shake old foundations,
- check the ground under them for soft spots or old fill,
- rebuild the base with crushed stone,
- and pour new concrete with a plain broom finish and tooled edges that look right next to an older house.
The 2008 tornado and what it left behind
On April 28, 2008, a tornado touched down several times in Suffolk and Driver. More than 200 people were hurt in Suffolk, and over 120 homes and 12 businesses were seriously damaged. The Burnett's Mill and Hillpoint Farms subdivisions were hit hard, and older structures in Driver were damaged. If your driveway or patio was replaced during the repairs after that storm and is now cracking or settling, we can look at it and recommend repair or replacement.
Getting across the river is harder now
The Kings Highway Bridge, a swing bridge that carried Route 125 across the Nansemond River, opened in 1928 and was closed by VDOT in March 2005 as unsafe. For homeowners, that mostly changes commute routes. For a pour, it means planning the delivery route so the truck reaches your forms on time with the mix still fresh.
What we pour in Driver
Concrete driveways. On rural lots outside the village core, driveways can be long, so we plan base depth and joints along the full run.
Patios and stamped concrete. Backyard patios are a natural upgrade in the subdivisions near Driver. Stamped patterns like slate or cobble suit the area's rural look.
Sidewalks and walkways. Front walks, garden paths and steps.
Concrete slabs. Shed and workshop floors, equipment pads and garage floors.
Concrete repair. Crack filling, patching and section replacement.
Aprons on Driver's roads
Driver is inside the City of Suffolk, so a driveway that meets a city street falls under the city's right-of-way rules. The restoration manual says new and replacement aprons follow the city's Public Facilities Manual and that the forms are inspected before the pour. On a historic-district lot, that apron is also the most visible piece of concrete from the road, so we plan its finish to suit the house as well as the city's standard.

Driver Questions
Can you work around an older house in the Driver Historic District?
Yes. We cut and lift old concrete in pieces rather than breaking it against the house, protect plantings and use a finish that suits an older home. Ask the city whether any historic review applies to your property.
My Hillpoint Farms driveway is cracking. Is it from the tornado rebuild?
We cannot say without seeing it. Cracking can come from a thin slab, a weak base, too few joints or tree roots. We will look and explain what we find.
Do you pour long rural driveways near Driver?
Yes. We plan the base, thickness and joint layout along the full length, and we pour in sections when that gives a better finish.
