Small Town, Bigger Lots

Windsor is eleven miles up U.S. Route 460 from Suffolk, and it is a place where concrete contractors get asked for longer driveways, bigger slabs and more room to park. The town was chartered on March 15, 1902, next to a Norfolk Southern rail line, and it stayed small for most of the century. Then in 2001 it annexed 2.8 square miles of Isle of Wight County, and the population went from 916 in 2000 to 2,626 in 2010. The 2020 census counted 2,746.

Why Windsor jobs look different

The town covers about 4 square miles, and some properties in and around it sit on larger lots than you find in the cities to the east. That changes what people ask for:

  • A driveway that reaches a house set well back from the road. Long runs need a solid base the whole way and joints planned along the length.
  • A slab for a pole barn, detached garage or workshop. These carry trucks, tractors, mowers and tools.
  • A pad for a camper or a boat. Weight sits in one spot for months, so thickness and reinforcement matter.

Higher ground than most of Hampton Roads

Windsor's listed elevation is 79 feet, which is high for this part of Virginia; Suffolk's is 39 feet and Portsmouth's is 20. Higher ground does not mean you can skip drainage. A low corner of a yard can still hold water after a summer storm, and a slab poured on loose fill will settle. We strip organic soil, bring in crushed stone and compact it before forms go up. For long driveways we crown or cross-slope the surface so rain runs off the sides instead of down the middle.

Shop and garage slabs

For an outbuilding, we start by asking what will sit on the floor. A riding mower and hand tools need less than a car lift or a loaded trailer. Common choices: 1. Five to six inches of concrete for vehicle and equipment floors. 2. Thickened edges under walls, with anchor bolts set while the concrete is wet. 3. Rebar on a grid, held up on chairs so it ends up in the middle of the slab, not at the bottom. 4. A vapor barrier under the slab if the building will be closed in and used as a workspace. 5. A smooth trowel finish inside and a broom finish on the apron outside.

Patios and walks for town homes

Closer to the town center, lots tend to be smaller and houses closer to the street. Here the calls are for front walks, porch steps, back patios and concrete repair where old slabs have heaved. A stamped concrete patio can give a plain backyard a finished look without the upkeep of pavers that shift and grow weeds. We can match a stamped border to a plain center to keep the cost of decoration down.

Two historic farmsteads nearby

The Henry Saunders House and the William Scott Farmstead in Windsor are on the National Register of Historic Places. They are a reminder that this is farm country with old homes mixed in. If you own an older house here, we take care around old foundations, chimneys and brick steps when we remove concrete.

Roads in and out

U.S. 460 runs through the middle of Windsor, leading 11 miles southeast to Suffolk, and U.S. 258 crosses it on the west side of town, heading 15 miles north to Smithfield. A new entrance off one of those highways is a different permit question than one onto a town street, so we check whether the Town of Windsor, Isle of Wight County or the state handles yours before the layout is final. Windsor Questions

How thick should a slab be for my Windsor pole barn?

For cars, trucks and small tractors we usually pour five to six inches with rebar and thickened edges. For lighter use, four inches with mesh can work. We size it once we know what will be parked or stored on it.

Can you pour a long driveway in sections?

Yes. On long rural drives we often pour in planned sections with construction joints, which keeps the finish quality high and lets us schedule around weather.

Do you need a permit to tie a new driveway into a road in Windsor?

A new entrance onto a public road usually needs approval. Which office handles it depends on whether the road is a town street or a state route, so we check for your address.
