Pattern and Color in a Single Pour
Stamped concrete gives a patio, walkway or driveway the look of slate, brick, cobblestone, flagstone or wood planks while keeping the strength of a poured slab. We color the concrete, press textured mats into the surface while it is still workable, and seal it once it cures. In Suffolk, the sealing and the timing are what decide how good it looks five years from now.
Patterns and colors
- Ashlar slate and random stone: widely used patio patterns with a natural, irregular look
- Ashlar cut stone: squared stone blocks in a repeating layout
- Brick and cobblestone: often used as borders or on front walks of older homes
- Wood plank: a deck look without boards to rot
- Seamless textures: stone texture without grout lines, for a subtler finish
Color usually comes in two layers: a base color mixed into the concrete or broadcast onto the surface, and a release agent in a second color that settles into the low spots and gives depth. HomeGuide's stamped concrete guide notes that each added color and pattern raises the price.
Why timing matters
Stamping has to happen in a narrow window: firm enough to hold the pattern, soft enough to take it cleanly. On a hot, humid July day that window shrinks fast, so we schedule summer stamped work early in the day and bring enough hands to finish on time. In cool weather the window is longer but the slab cures more slowly, so we plan for that too. Large areas are poured in sections so the crew is never racing the concrete.
Sealer is part of the job
Stamped concrete depends on its sealer. The sealer brings out the color, keeps water out of the textured surface, and slows the fading that comes from summer sun. In Suffolk, where January nights average just below freezing and rain tops 50 inches a year, an unsealed stamped surface takes on water and can flake when that water freezes. HomeGuide recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years to keep the color from fading. We tell you which sealer we used and when to redo it.
Where stamped concrete works well
- Back patios and outdoor dining areas
- Front walks leading to brick steps or a porch
- Pool surrounds, with a texture and a slip-resistant additive in the sealer
- Driveway borders and aprons, or a full driveway where budget allows
- Fire pit areas and garden paths
Stamped surfaces can be slick when wet, especially with a glossy sealer. Around pools, steps and anywhere people walk in the rain, we add a grit to the sealer for traction.
Stamped concrete or pavers
HomeGuide lists stamped concrete at about $8 to $19 per square foot installed and paver patios at $10 to $17. Stamped concrete has no joints for weeds or ants and does not shift stone by stone, but it does need resealing and a crack will run through the pattern. Pavers cost a bit more, need no sealing, and can be lifted and reset one at a time. We are glad to walk you through the trade-offs for your yard.
Care
- Reseal every 2 to 3 years, or sooner where the surface gets full sun
- Use a plastic shovel on snow and skip rock salt
- Rinse off pollen, leaves and grill spills so they do not stain

Stamped Concrete Questions
How long does stamped concrete last?
The slab itself can last decades like any well-built concrete. The color and sealer need upkeep: HomeGuide recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years to keep the color from fading.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
It can be when wet, especially with a high-gloss sealer. We add a slip-resistant grit to the sealer on walkways, steps and pool surrounds.
Does stamped concrete crack?
All concrete can crack. We cut control joints into the pattern, often along grout lines, so cracking stays in planned places, and a good base and cure keep it to a minimum.
How long before I can use it?
HomeGuide's guide puts stamped concrete cure time at 7 to 10 days. Light foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two; we give you the dates.
Can you stamp my existing concrete?
Not by stamping the old slab directly. A stamped overlay can go over sound concrete; HomeGuide's concrete resurfacing cost guide lists stamped overlays at $7 to $20 per square foot.
